Meet the Meraki AI Assistant: Smart Networking for SMBs
A friendly, honest look at what the Meraki AI Assistant actually does for a small business, how it compares to Juniper Mist, Aruba, TP-Link and UniFi, and why it's a genuinely good fit for Australian SMBs.
'AI networking' — what does it actually mean for a small business?
Every networking vendor is talking about AI right now, and if you run a small or medium business in Australia, it's easy to tune it out as marketing noise. Fair enough. But underneath the hype there's something genuinely useful happening — and it's worth a few minutes to understand what it does for you, not just for an enterprise IT team.
In plain terms, 'AI in your network' usually means one of two things:
- A conversational assistant you can actually talk to in plain English ("why is the Wi-Fi slow in the back office?").
- AIOps — automated analysis that watches your network in the background, spots patterns, and flags issues before you notice them.
The best platforms do both. Let's start with the one we know best, then compare it fairly to the alternatives.
Meet the Meraki AI Assistant
If you're running a Meraki network, the AI Assistant is built directly into the dashboard you already use. You click an icon in the top-right corner and ask a question in plain English — no command line, no scripting, no special training. It's powered by Cisco's Deep Network Model combined with your own network's real-time data.
Here's what it can genuinely do today.
Monitoring
Ask it questions and get real-time insights, such as:
- Security events on your network
- Which clients are connected and what they're doing
- Compliance status
- Device activity across your sites
Instead of clicking through menus, you just ask.
Troubleshooting
This is where it earns its keep for a small business. It does data-driven root-cause analysis and suggests next steps to cut downtime. If a connection is dropping or an app is misbehaving, the assistant helps you work out why — and it now streams its reasoning steps as it works, so you can see how it reached an answer. There's also a Stop button if you want to halt it mid-task.
Automated and agentic workflows
It can help with routine operations like:
- Provisioning devices
- Making configuration changes
- Adjusting firewall rules
- Updating security policies
That's the kind of fiddly admin that quietly eats an afternoon.
Support case management
You can retrieve the status and summaries of your Cisco support cases by number, or open a low-severity (sev-4) case right from the chat — no separate portal hunt.
The bits that matter most for SMBs
A few things make this especially friendly for small businesses:
- It's available across ALL Meraki licence tiers. You don't need to buy a premium edition just to get the assistant. (Some deeper features do follow tier restrictions — for example, PCAP packet analysis needs the Advantage tier.)
- Your data is not used to train the AI. Cisco states this plainly. For Australian businesses thinking about privacy, that's a clear, simple answer.
- It's generally available to customers, with a few regional exceptions (China, India and FedRAMP clouds). Australia is fine.
So on a typical small-business kit — say a Meraki MX67 security appliance for your firewall and routing, an MS130-8 8-port cloud-managed switch, and an MR36 Wi-Fi 6 access point — the AI Assistant is right there in the same dashboard, included, ready to answer questions.
An honest limitation
We promised honesty, so here it is: Cisco itself recommends validating the assistant's suggestions, especially for critical configuration or troubleshooting. It's an expert helper, not an infallible autopilot.
In practice that means:
- Use it to speed up the boring and the diagnostic work.
- Sanity-check anything that touches firewall rules or critical config before you commit.
- You can give thumbs-up/thumbs-down feedback to help it improve.
- An organisation can switch it off entirely via a support request if you'd prefer.
That's the right way to think about all network AI today — a smart assistant that saves you time, not a replacement for good judgement.
How the other vendors compare (fairly)
Meraki isn't the only game in town, and a good reseller should tell you that. Here's an honest read on the alternatives.
Juniper Mist + Marvis
Marvis is widely regarded as the most mature conversational network assistant out there. You can ask it something like "troubleshoot Teams" and it'll give natural-language root-cause across Wi-Fi, LAN, WAN and security. It can even auto-fix issues (self-driving) or recommend an action (driver-assist).
It's genuinely excellent — but it's an enterprise-grade, premium platform. For most small offices it's more capability and more budget than you'll ever need.
HPE Aruba Networking Central
Aruba has strong AIOps: AI Insights with service-level baselining and performance assurance across wireless, switching and WAN, plus proactive recommendations. There's an emerging AI copilot for root-cause and remediation too. Again, very capable — and again, enterprise-leaning.
TP-Link Omada
Omada markets AI-driven network optimisation in its cloud platform: performance analysis, optimisation recommendations and proactive issue resolution. It's aimed at budget-conscious buyers and is more of an AIOps-style optimisation layer than a full conversational assistant.
Ubiquiti UniFi
Here's a nuance worth knowing. UniFi's strongest AI is actually in its Protect camera line — person and vehicle detection, facial recognition, number-plate logging, audio classification, and natural-language search of camera events via its AI Key appliance. That's genuinely impressive for video.
On the network side, though, UniFi's conversational/troubleshooting assistant is comparatively thin — the in-dashboard assistant chat was recently pulled. So UniFi's AI is great for cameras, but it's not yet a network co-pilot.
What this actually means for an Australian SMB
Let's bring it home. For most small businesses, the practical win isn't the most powerful AI on the market — it's AI that is:
- Built into the platform you already run, so there's nothing extra to learn.
- Included rather than a pricey add-on, so you're not paying enterprise premiums.
- Genuinely useful for everyday questions and troubleshooting, so it saves you real time.
That's exactly Meraki's pitch, and it lines up well with how a typical Australian small office actually operates.
To be fair to the alternatives:
- The Marvis-class enterprise tools are genuinely more powerful — but they're overkill and over budget for a typical small office.
- UniFi's network AI isn't there yet, even though its camera AI is excellent.
And a final reality check: AI assists, it doesn't replace good setup and human judgement. The fundamentals — proper VLANs, sensible firewall rules, decent access-point placement — still matter most. Treat the AI as a smart helper that saves you time, not a substitute for getting the basics right.
