Why a Cloud-Managed Firewall Keeps Getting Better After You Buy It
Most network gear starts ageing the day it's installed. A cloud-managed Cisco Meraki MX is different — the same box keeps gaining features, security and even speed across its supported life.

Here's a frustrating truth about most network hardware: the day it's installed is often the best it will ever be.
You buy a firewall, plug it in, and it does the job. But then the world keeps moving. New threats appear. Features stagnate because the manufacturer has moved its attention to the next model. Performance that felt comfortable on day one starts to feel tight as your team grows and your internet plan gets faster.

Cisco delivered an up-to-3x performance boost to existing MX models through a firmware update. It shipped in MX 18.2 and later, and it's on by default for the MX75, MX85, MX95, MX105 and the larger appliances — at no additional cost.
Let that sink in. The hardware you already own effectively got faster overnight, just by being on a supported firmware path. No new box. No invoice. No site visit.
That almost never happens with traditional gear. Normally, more speed means buying a bigger model. Here, the platform improved underneath the customers who already had it.
Always-current security, curated by Talos
Speed is nice, but security is where this really matters.
The MX's threat protection — its intrusion detection and prevention (IDS/IPS) and Advanced Malware Protection — is continuously updated with rules curated by Cisco's Talos threat intelligence team and pushed from the cloud.
Talos is one of the largest commercial threat-research teams in the world. When they identify a new attack, that intelligence flows down to your appliance automatically. So the same MX keeps defending against brand-new threats without you lifting a finger.

One platform, a clear ladder
Another quiet advantage: the whole MX line lives on the same dashboard and the same firmware path.
That means growing a site, or replacing one, doesn't mean learning a new system. The current range spans:
- Meraki MX67 (MX67-HW) — ideal for a small branch or compact office
- Meraki MX68 (MX68-HW) — a small-branch appliance with a few extra ports
- Meraki MX75 (MX75-HW) — a newer multi-gigabit appliance with SFP WAN ports, suited to busier or growing sites
- MX85, MX95 and MX105 — larger multi-gigabit appliances for bigger sites again
Whether you're running a single shopfront or a handful of locations, it's all managed the same way. A two-person office and a fifty-person head office speak the same language. That consistency saves real time and real money — and it makes adding a new site far less daunting.

The MX is increasingly the on-ramp from plain SD-WAN toward SASE — Secure Access Service Edge. In plain English, SASE means delivering networking and security together from the cloud, so your protection follows your people and your apps rather than sitting in one office.
When your business is ready, the same MX can connect to Cisco's cloud-delivered security service (Cisco Secure Access) to extend protection to remote workers and cloud apps. Unified networking and security, from one platform.
The key word is when. This is a direction you can grow into, not something you have to adopt now. You buy the MX for what you need today, and the path to bigger things is already there if and when you want it.
The honest caveats
We're a reseller, but we'd rather be straight with you than oversell. This isn't free magic, and there are things you should know:
- The advanced security features need a licence. IDS/IPS and Advanced Malware Protection require the Advanced Security licence, not the base tier.
- SASE / Secure Access is an additional paid service. It's a genuine option to grow into, but it's a separate subscription.
- No vendor is immune to vulnerabilities. Meraki included. The advantage is that fixes are pushed quickly from the cloud — but no platform is bulletproof.

Within its supported life, though, the platform genuinely improves underneath you. That's the honest, remarkable bit — and it's the opposite of most hardware you'll ever buy.
What it means for an Australian SMB
Put it all together and the appeal is simple.
Buying into a platform that keeps adding value means:
- Less forklift churn — fewer rip-and-replace upgrades
- More predictable planning — you know the upgrade ladder in advance
- A network that's still improving years after purchase — not slowly decaying
A small office might start with an MX67 or MX68. A larger or growing site might begin with an MX75. Either way, they're on the same upgrade path, the same dashboard, and the same trajectory of improvement — getting more secure and, at times, even faster while you get on with running your business.
That's a genuinely different deal from the usual hardware lifecycle, and for a budget-conscious Australian business it's worth taking seriously.
